Ida Maria
Fortress 'round My Heart
re-released album 9 February
Ida's making the big time in America launching new single 'Oh My God' in the UK and seizing the opportunity to re-release her album 'Fortress 'round My Heart'. The 2009 issue has new artwork and a new tracklisting with three new songs : 'Leave Me, Let Me go', 'In The End' and the optimistic 'We're All Going To Hell'. See Ida on NME Awards Shows duty at london Koko on Wed 11 Feb, Manchester Club Academy on 12 Feb and Glasgow garage on Friday 13th Feb.

Ladyhawke
Paris Is Burning
new single 2 March
Ladyhawke aka Pip made the top forty last time out with the 30,000 selling 'My Delirium' now here's the re-release of the excellent 123bpm 'Paris Is Burning'. A fine single and it deserves to go higher, top twenty? Yeah

Metro Station
Shake It
new single 23 March
LA based 'pop/punk' Metro Station are looking likely to score big UK success soon with 22 million plays of four tracks on their myspace, of which their new single the 152bpm 'Shake It' recieved 16 million. OK get ready ... they're fronted by Trace Cyrus ... yep Miley's brother, Billy Ray's son ... bit of a head start then. Good single, plenty of press opp's and hey presto .. top forty possibility

My Chemical Romance
Desolation Row
new single 9 February
Now then, MCR are back. The 167bpm 'Desolation Row' will be released as a 3,000 limited edition single on 12" and DMD formats next week. The song is featured on the upcoming soundtrack album to 'The Watchmen' movie due for big screen release in June and this is a powerful interpretation of what was Bob Dylan's finale to his 1965 album 'Highway 61 Revisited'. After the Brian May inspired guitar work on 'Welcome To The Black Parade' this seems somehow almost darker, faster and furious-er-er. At just under three minutes this is a taster for the new album the band are due to release this year. they were main support for Muse at wembley and I'm sure after four top twenty hits last time they'll head top side again

Prodigy
Omen Re-Mixes
new single 16 February
One word - brilliant. The Prodigy are on top of their game, four great mixes on this CD : the 140bpm 'Omen Extended', the 128bpm 'Omen - Herve's End Of The World Remix', the excellent 135bpm 'Omen - Noisia Remix' and the 'Chase & Status Remix' of Invaders Must Die'. Irresistable, Prodigy seem somehow sharper and phatter than previously, brilliant

Rise Against
Audience Of One
new single 2 March
Politico's Rise Against are back with a great single here, 'Audience Of One' pounds along at an edgy and alternating 80-160bpm not unlike a Green Day song, possibly reminiscent of 'Holiday', certainly in atmosphere. A good tune

Saint Ettienne
Method Of Modern Love
new single 9 February
London trio Saint ettienne pick up where they left off with the new single 'Method Of Modern Love' (not the Daryl hall & John Oates song of the same name). A lush four minute listen with rich vocals and great production, warm keyboard sound travelling at 125bpm in five fine variations including an accapella version. 'Nothing Can Stop Us Now' and their superb version of Neil Young's 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' come to mind and to the CD player again no doubt, the reason? The release of their new hits album, 'London Conversations - The Best of Saint Ettienne' on 16 Feb. Well worthy, look out for live dates to be announced soon

Snow Patrol
If There's A Rocket Tie Me To It
new single 9 March
Recorded in Summer '08 at Hansa Studios Berlin where David Bowie recorded 'Low', 'Heroes' and 'Lodger' and produced by Jacknife Lee of U2, Bloc Party and REM production duty. Needless to say top quality arrangement of another edgy Snow Patrol song, the only impediment to the 138bpm 'Rocket's' top forty take-off (geddit - sic) will be the half million fans who will already have it on their 'A Hundred Million Suns' album. Excellent

Veto
Built To Fail
new single 16 March
Another lush electro keyboard intro gets Veto's new single 'Built To Fail' underway before the stomping 155bpm dum track comes in. Veering towards the crossroads between Hot Chip, Nine Inch Nails, Klaxons and Pendulum Veto are a five piece from Arhuis and Copenhagen in Denmark (I wonder if Madness 'Our House' was a big hit in Arhuis? Just a thought, it may make a good cover for them one day). This is a good tune with remixes by Tomboy and James Braun. Airplay hit

VV Brown
Leave
new single 2 March
Northampton born VV Brown is a fine song-writer, her debut single 'Crying Blood' having won many fans like Jools Holland and Damon Albarn who invited her to play his Africa Express adventure in Lagos. Second single 'Leave' is another uptempo 151bpm affair with an interesting 125bpm remix by Little Boots with her Tenori-on. Coool and hit potential, major new artist alert

last week's post ...

Brakes
Hey Hey
new single 2 March
"I thought and I thought til I thought I had thunk and the ship was a sinking but it hadn't yet sunk" ... pure class.“It’s about a man who survives a boat crash, swims to shore and tells his story in a bar.” So says Eamon Hamilton. Brakes are back with a short sharp shock of a pop classic in their trademark style. 'Hey Hey' is the first single from their third album 'Touchdown'. You can see Brakes at Tommy's Bar in Cardiff on Monday 2nd February. This is superb record and if you don't geddit it's a mere two minutes long - check the vid for the revolutionary dough nuts gathering momentum before devourment. Well worthy brilliance. See the vid on you tube here

45 years ago.. The battle was on between Mersey Beat and The Tottenham Sound. The Beatles had dominated the charts of 63, but a shrewd businessman / drummer led his London group The Dave Clark Five to a sweet conquest over the Fab Four with 'Glad All Over' replacing 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand' at Number One in January 64.
In 1990 Ian Wright and his then Crystal Palace team mates covered the song for the clubs titanic FA Cup Final battle with Man Utd. Sadly for the Eagles after a thrilling 3-3 draw, United won the Cup 1-0 in the replay. At least Wright and Co. got to tour London's record shops signing 7" singles for fans!

Still All Wright
I must have been to hundreds of commercial radio dj meetings. Always a discussion would ensue on "how can we beat Radio 2 or Radio 1".
Well there I wa
s on Friday waiting for my car to be repaired when I noticed my ears getting excited at hearing the answer yet again. As the tedius Jeremy Vine closed up, on comes Steve Wright in his thirtieth BBC year and still going strong ..
First record Stevie Wonder 'Another Star', second record Yarborough & Peoples 'Don't Stop The Music', third record Donna Summer 'State Of Independence', fourth record Harpo 'Movie Star', fifth record Martha Reeves 'Nowhere To Run' ..
Wrighty used to use a branding statement to describe his show 'You'll Always Hear A Better Song'. I've always thought Steve's trick is not only are they better songs but you're pretty well certain to never hear these kind of oldies anywhere else.
So here for the moaning minnies of commercial radio is an analysis of the five tracks above ...
Stevie Wonder's 'Another Star',
the third single from Stevie's classic 1976 double album 'Songs In The Key Of Life', followed the top five hits 'I Wish' and 'Sir Duke' just made the top thirty in 1977
Yarborough & Peoples 'Don't Stop The Music'
a Stevie Wonder song which became the only hit for this duo, a top tenner at the turn of 1980 into 1981
Harpo 'Movie Star'
- a top thirty hit for Swede Harpo in May 1976
Donna Summer 'State Of Independence'
- Summer's first single produced by the legend Quincy Jones, a hit in 1982 at the same time Jones and Jackson were planning 'Thriller', Hot - no by now Steve's sizzling and he's only 10 minutes in...
Martha Reeves 'Nowhere To Run' - a 1960's mod favourite still loved on dancefloors today.
In sixteen years of primetime FM and Oldies radio I don't recall ever having had one of those first four classics programmed and rarely, maybe once or twice did I have the pleasure of playing Martha Reeves Motown classic 'Nowhere To Run'. Put that twenty minute segment in the mix with the Radio 2 playlisting of Lady Gaga, Franz Ferdinand and Alesha Dixon and it's not to hard to imagine why people would want to tune away from commercial radio's regimented boring computer programmed sequences.
So the answer to any aspiring commercial station who'd really like to compete with the intelligent music radio aspoused by Radio 2 is hire Steve Wright to do your music, or get someone else who knows a bit about it

A joker or a thief
Gordon Brown says he didn't see the recession coming. So it's make your mind up time, there's only two possibilities left - incompetance or deceit. Liberal Democrat Vince Cable has been predicting the credit crash loudly for near ten years. So are we to believe Great Gordon? The man who also said he didn't realise five million of the lowest paid would lose out with the abolition of the 10% tax band. This from a Labour Party man who's had the nation's cash book's in his hands for twelve years? Even Mr Bean could have done that sum. If Brown's not being truthful about not seeing the recession coming, then the possibility of mischief making arises. Entirely consistent with the 10% tax rate fiasco. How stupid does he think we are? I hope he's not right. View article in The Daily Express
