this week's post ...

General Fiasco
Something Sometime
new single 2 March
General Fiasco are currently recording their debut album in Northern Ireland with the help of top producer Dave Bascombe of Tears For Fears fame. From it he first single, the pounding 158bpm 'Something Sometime' is very much in the style of Celtic Rock espoused by Fratellis and The View and comes with two instrumental versions one with backing vocals and one without. Very interesting, great name, could do well

The Hours
Big Black Hole
new single 30 March
The Hours are a band of fine musicians and not afraid to use the piano! Their 2007 debut album 'Narcissus Road' was packed full of gems like 'Ali' and the new single, the 156bpm 'Big Black Hole' picks up where they left off. A pounding piano launches into a strong beat driven song with top vocals. The Chancellor's accounts, a chance encounter 'Big Black Hole' could be anything. Whatever this is a fine single, I sense The Hours receiving a phone call from Jools Holland's booker imminently.

InnerPartySystem
Remixes Promo CD
InnerPartySystem are such talented folk, they've just played a sell-out show at Cardiff Barfly as part of their UK tour to launch their own brilliant new single 'Don't Stop' released this week, 9 February. This special CD features their work on trax from The Killers, Ladyhawke, Katy Perry and Joy Division. When Brandon Flowers launches into his "Are we human or are we dancer" routine IPS provide a thudding 132bpm electro backbeat to leave you in no doubt of the answer. I love Ladyhawke's 'Paris Is Burning' and they've introduced some breath-taking light and shade with an accapella with keyboard only first minute before a 'nasty' pounding 123bpm electro soundtrack engulfs all in it's way - irresistible and perfect for a segue from Ladyhawke to Lady GaGa. Now then, if you like Katy Perry you probably want to belt out her songs in a full throttle vocal stylee, so you probably won't be too keen on the IPS re-working paced at the same 132bpm but a little choppy. Then finally the 165bpm Joy Divsion classic 'Transmission' gets the IPS treatment, in a very similar vein to their own 'Don't Stop'. Along with Filthy Dukes these guys have to be up for some top remixing awards. Excellent

Keane
Better Than This
new single 16 March
What's this? It sounds like a remodelling of Bowie 'Ashes To Ashes' ... it's speeded up a tad and it's a clever and subtle idea if it is. Keane are rounding off a good comeback year with a couple of sold out shows at London's 02 Arena this Thursday and Friday 12 and 13th February. Having a top ten album in the USA and a big hit here with 'Spiralling', a fine set of reviews for their home-coming Manchester gig recently it would be justice to see the 140bpm 'Better Than This' chart, however as with their last single 'Perfect Symmetry' fans have probably already got this on the album. It should pick up plenty of airplay though.

King Blues
Save The World, Get The Girl
new single 16 February
Yep this is a great single. It's a great title for a great song with The King Blues trademark punk rock reggae. 100bpm. It's the title of their album. I really hope this takes the band into the top ten. Look out for The King Blues on a promotional tour for this single in association with The Big Issue, anyone carrying a copy of that weeks Big Issue will get free admission to their gig, check tour dates on their website. Excellent

Lucien Caine
The Beat That My Heart Missed
new single 2 March
Mr Romontic Noir, Manchester's man of mystique Lucien Caine has arrived with another atmospheric four track single. The lead track the moody 'The Beat That My Heart Missed' travels at around 111bpm with a lush arrangement featuring Hammond organ, piano and violins. If Nick Cave had duetted with Nico it would probably have sounded much like Lucien's haunting duet with former Gus Gus singer Heidrun Bjornsdottir on 'She Loves To Lose'. There's the plaintive 'Let Us Be The Rumour' and 'Internal Affairs' based on Serge Gainsberg's 'Requiem Pour Un Con'. This is thoughtful well written and produced material, Lucien's here for the long haul, I feel he'll go the distance.

Me My Head
Night Is On Fire
new single 2 March
I was honoured by a gang of lads last week who immediately in front of the stage were serenading me with Kings Of Leon's "The decks are on fire" .. I think they were you know what. Anyways KOL's use of the words 'On Fire' may be spreading but that's the only similarity with Me My Head's new 133bpm single 'Night Is On Fire'. A choppy, jaunty, rocky 'Burgundy hats and hernias' tune which is different enough to make a difference consolidating the progress made by their first single 'Damage Is Done'. Good record

Noisettes - Kissy Sell Out Remix
Don't Upset The Rhythm
new single 23 March
Kissy Sell Out has remade this 2'30" 119bpm track into a similarly punchy fast flowing but housed up 128bpm at a new duration of 4 minutes 30 seconds. It's great. So great it emphasizes how superb the song is and the utterly brilliant vocals of Shingai Shoniwa, man she out graces Grace Jones. If justice there be somewhere this'll be in the top ten

Snowbyrds
Riot / Master Of Ceremonies
new single 9 March
"Arctic's sneer married to traditional rock", so says the press release on Blackburn band The Snowbyrds who like most Blackburn Rovers fans will be ruing the day Paul Ince got the job. Best unsigned band at the 2008 Big Reunion, The Snowbyrds make an impressive debut here with the choppy 135bpm 'Riot' and the intriguing 'Master Of Ceremonies'. (Is this about Ince?). Unusual in that it intro's with a brilliant effect of an old style tape recorder wuurrring into action, it's great really catches your attention and the song's a winner too. Good start

Tigers That Talked
23 Fears
new single
Tigers That Talked, a mish mash of eerie folk rock with '23 Fears' sounding similar to The Cure's 1980 opus 'A Forest'. This is a good single, again it's different and the arrangement pounds along at 157bpm and works to good effect.

36 years ago.. The Sweet, one of the iconic groups of Glam Rock got their only UK number one.
When you think how influential the band were it's seems odd they made hits for only around four years.
'Blockbuster', their only chart-topper reigned supreme for five weeks through January and February 1973.

How good were The Sweet? Don't let anyone kid you otherwise, The Sweet were musician's musicians. Although almost all their hits were written by Chinn & Chapman, arguably their biggest international hit 'Ballroom Blitz' was recorded in one take. Music and vocals. Beat that

Brown Nose Day
Oh great, coming soon another chance to remind ourselves that the government wastes much of our taxes on un-necessary's like road narrowing and Jonathan Ross while the world goes hungry. I wonder what machinations will be made to ensure another record breaking haul this time.

Red Face Day
"British Jobs For British Workers". So said Mr Brown in 2007. Now we have the good news. The reason foreign workers are here for jobs in Britain, it's Gordon's new global order game. We welcome foreigners - three million since immigration controls were tightened six years ago, in return, when we find our source of income drying up we get to move to Europe to find work. Uproot our families, leave our friends, learn a foreign language, learn a foreign custom. And thank you Lord Mandelson for making it clear. Now we know where we stand. In fact Britain's Boss Of Business, perhaps you'd like us all to dissappear. 'Crisis what crisis eh?', it's all rosy at New Labour think'n'spin tank HQ. But oh dear, in our diversity some hold an entirely different view of how the future should unfold.
They shameful New Labour Party should remove the word Labour from it's name and reveal it's true purpose. Perhaps one day we'll have an open debate about it without fear.

Save half til later
... it's a simple idea and that's what people seem to be doing. Because of Americas' recession-depression the expected $300 million loot from Superbowl spending has been revised down by half to $150 million

The World At War
BBC2 are showing The World At War on Saturday afternoons. If you ever wondered about the horrors our previous generations faced this provides much food for thought. Commissioned for Thames Television in 1973 and narrated by Laurence Olivier it's a stark chronological overview of how things steadily got out of hand. It was Churchill's contention for many years before the war that Hitler could have been stopped and millions of lives saved. How familiar does this sound, the documentary recalls the British forces expedition to Norway in 1940 aimed at cutting German supply lines. Norway, a country frequently snowbound, our troops sent there without ski's.

Kids eh?
A group of children were trying very hard to become accustomed to Nursery. The biggest hurdle they faced was that the teacher insisted on NO baby talk! You need to use 'Big People' words,' she was always reminding them. She asked John what he had done over the weekend? 'I went to visit my Nana'. No, you went to visit your GRANDMOTHER. Use 'Big People' words!' She then asked Mitchell what he had done? 'I took a ride on a choo-choo'. She said. 'No, you took a ride on a TRAIN. You must remember to use 'Big People' words'. She then asked little Alex what he had done? 'I read a book' he replied. That's WONDERFUL!' the teacher said. 'What book did you read?'. Alex thought real hard about it, then puffed out his chest with great pride, and said, 'Winnie the SH*T'.
