this week's post ...

Gloria Cycles
No Zeroes
new single
Gloria Cycles are improving all the time, here's another punchy new two track cd with the lead track, the 2 minutes 40 seconds 164bpm 'No Zeroes' followed by the short 1' 40" 'Wonderbus'. Short and sweet and a big maybe

Josephine Oniyama
Closer
new single 17 November
xWho? Yes Josephine opened the Liverpool Proms in 2000 with Ladysmith Black Mambazo and since has guested with Byrds legend Roger McGuinn and Josh Ritter, recording her first demos with Elbow's Guy Garvey. 'Closer' is an unusually frenetic debut which kinda stands out firstly for it's solid 118bpm bassline intro and then winding up to 250bpm's for the main verse & chorus. 'Rollicking rockabilly' as the pr says is an apt description and Jo signed to Island should pick up some valuable new fans with this release

Kid British
Elizabeth
new single
Yep she's on the cover again, just like on The Pistols 'God Save The Queen' but without vthe nasal safety pin. This appears to be a love song 'Lizbeth' as Kid Brit serenades her at a pop punky 164bpm it's a nice idea. However, it probably needs another silver or golden jubilee to catch on

Lucien Caine
EP1 The Only Man That Matters
new EP 27 October
Well this is a bit of a classic cd, the debut from Manchester's Lucien Caine. Four superb tracks here leading with the 110bpm 'The Only man That Matters', then the 90bpm 'Advice From Strangers', our initial fave the 110bpm 'Black Widow' and the slow commanding 78bpm 'Those Days Are Gone'. This is the first of three four track EP's showcasing an album's worth of material. Very, very good

Opera House
'Change In Nature'
new single/EP 10 November
Four superb tracks here on Operahouse debut EP. The 100bpm title track kicks in first, then the gripping 93bpm 'Criminals' and the 95bpm 'Plastic Cage' and the outstanding 96bpm finale, 'Red hats For The Masses'. For every thousand of these cd's sold this environmentally conscious band will dedicate a quarter of an acre of woodland with the woodland trust, each with about 25 mature trees

Red Light Company
Scheme Eugene James Ruill Remix
new single
Red Light Company return to Mad4it at Cardiff Barfly on Friday 7 November 2008. 'Scheme Eugene' is their latest single and now it comes in an excellent throbbing 135bpm James Ruill remix, well worthy!

Thomas Tantrum
Rage Against The Tantrum
new single
Well well, this is the dog's bollothingy .. these chaps and chapesses have been around a little while and this is their best yet. full of youthful exuberance at a joyous 124bpm, catchy and uplifting and a stupendous title 'Rage Against The Tantrum' - very nice and if there be any justice this should follow Noah & the Whale into the top ten

The Verve
Rather Be
new single 17 November
It's classic Verve with Ashcroft strolling once again through video land, no mention of the Mrs though. 'Rather Be' should be top twenty without too much trouble, a worthy follow-up to 'Love Is Noise' which made the top five and spend nine weeks in the forty. Good chune

the evidence

Pistols Fire
TV Fury At Rock Filth, so read The Daily Mirror on Saturday 1 December 1976. Well it was a long time ago, but it is possible to glean a few of things from this landmark cultural event. The late Bill Grundy's interviewing technique is simply awful - being drunk is no excuse. The Pistols seem entirely harmless until Grundy goads a reaction out of them. I have a lot of sympathy for Grandads but if Bill was as poor with every guest he should have been fired long before Le Pistola

Emmin's Top 34
Piers Morgan recently floored David Dimbleby's Question Time panel with his boasts of how much money he'd made thanks to Gordon Brown's housing boom time. Over the weekend the TV Personality, former News Of The World Editor and way back when Radio One Mr Showbiz Nasty has been at it again on his interview show 'The Dark Side Of Fame'. Artist Tracy Emmin faced the inquisition "So how many people have you slept with", Emmin "34 - for full sex, that's not very many is it?" Morgan "It's enough to be Leader of The Liberal Democrats"
More than enough to be Ghandi. The legendary Indian leader made a point of sleeping with as many naked women as were available each night without having sex with any. The purpose of this exercise? To test his will power and celibacy

Words & Action
As Gordon The Great continues the line that he's not responsible for the deregulated banking fiasco that has brought Capitalism to the brink, 'it's nothing to do with me but I'm the man to sort it out'. Here's another worrying thought. Wherever you maybe in UK PLC it's an interesting exercise to consider whether your council is continuing to spend your money like there is no tomorrow on useless non essentials. Road narrowing schemes that make it more difficult for emergency services, rubbish collection that sees an increase in vermine, education like learn through play, a health policy of centralising hospitals, a police force not paid properly, an army not armed properly, an MoD frequently losing top secret information. Wherever Nero is he must be fiddling-ing again right now

Why does
Tiger Woods wear two pairs of trousers? In case he gets a hole in one!
