Billy Talent & Anti Flag
Turn Your Back
new i-tunes single 15 September
"There's no place to hide mate so kiss your ass goodbye mate ... " A hearty collaboration between much requested Billy Talent and Pittsburgh anti-establishment punks Anti Flag has resulted in the chunky and well worthy 134bpm 'Turn Your Back'. Out exclusively on i-tunes only for two weeks from 15 September all royalties will be donated to the Red Cross charity campaign. Billy Talent fans look out, they start recording their third album with AC/DC, Offspring and Incubus producer Brendan O'Brien in November.

Black Tide
Shout
new single 25 August
A storming single with evident Maiden influence, not sure about hit potential, possibly a bit dated

The Courteeners
That Kiss X
new single
A sensitive tale of forbidden fruit at a rather more leisurely 114bpm demonstrates a softer side to Manchesters talented Courteeners. They've gone from strength to strength since their sell out show at Cardiff Barfly Mad4it last December. 'Not Nineteen Forever' their biggest song to date, should easily find Top Twenty follow-up success with 'That Kiss x'.

CSS
Move Remixes (Cut Copy & Frank Music's Club Bingo Dub)

CSS I love them, send me Lovefoxx for Christmas please - 'Move' is a great track a dancefloor singalong and these mixes, firstly the chunky electro bass of Cut Copy and then the heavily drummed up Frankmusic's Club Bingo Dub are fab!

Flobots
Handlebars Remix

"I can lead the nation with a microphone ...." 'Handlebars' is a groundbreaking revelation, No.1 for two months on LA's number one alternative station KROQ Pasadena. So interesting a composition is it that
DJ Shadow became a big fan and offered the group his remixing services, and at 142bpm very upbeat it is for the Shadow too. Flobots will be playing alongside Rage Against The Machine .... at the Democratic National Convention this coming week ... a votewinner for Obama? a record seller for Rage, an eyeopener for Flobots. It's a top platter, Amen

Goldblade
Mutiny
new album 8 September
Fourteen punked up tracks here from the excellent Goldblade. Choice titles like 'Riot Squad for Toxic FC', 'Everyones On Drugs' and 'America Destroys All Its
Heroes', 'City Of Ghosts' and 'Beyond God & Elvis'. Punk in it's authentic seventies Sham 69 bolic tradition. Full of energy, great

Grinderman
No Pussy Blues - Remixes
new single
An amusing little tale unless of course you are in the same boat as Mr Grinderman. A tongue in cheek tomb with a witty lyric in six fine mixes, our fave being the 138bpm Adam Freeland Remix - all electro with chunky bass aplenty
. Life without feline not good but funny dammit

Iglu & Hartly
In This City
new single
Yes this has 120bpm dancefloor hit potential, perhaps the song is not strong enough although there's a story line which might go to the heart of the listener. A maybe

Johnny Flynn
Brown Trout Blues
new single 1 September
I'm a big fan of Johnny Flynn, there's a certain unexpected something about his material. 'Brown Trout Blues' for it's wholly unusual title is a lush and adorable lyric, it would be no injustice were Jules of Holland to grab Mr Flynn for a live Later and our John to hit the top five. Choice chune

Maybes?
Summertime
new single 25 August
"In the heavy heavy heat of the afternoon..." if only our weather was that predictable. Sadly, it's been proverbiallying it down and catchy as this semi punky type pop tune is, that's probably a major weakness in it's chart attack. Even so The Maybes? show promise

1913
Can't Move On / Roll Into You
new single 22 September
Hotly tipped Mancunians 1913 release their debut on Mon 22 sept and the launch party is top two days later. well nearly top anyway, 23 floors up in the
Beetham Tower @ Cloud 23 in The Hilton Hotel. This is a fuine tune rippling rather towards Fools Gold than Cigs & Alcohol although around the same lazy stomping 116bpm. One to watch

Noah & The Whale
Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down
album 11 August
A fine double a side single with the stomping 139bpm 'Catch This Disease' as lead track. The faster 152bpm 'Lead The Way' is also well worthy

Noah & The Whale
Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down
album 11 August
What a great track the top ten hit 'Five Years On' is, intimate, witty, a great hook and a song you can imagine being played in five years time! Well here comes a whole album of ironic gems from the opener '2 Atoms In A Molecule', through 'Rocks & Daggers', 'Hold My Hand As I'm Lowered' to the wonderful title track ''Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down'. Hey it's the new age 2013 here we come

Streets
Everything Is Borrowed
new single
Can't wait to hear Radio 2 show gal Sarah Kennedy's reaction to this, her 'Oh no not this again' on hearing 'Dry Your Eyes' fade in was really a P45 moment but alas one rule for them and one rule for us. 'Everything Is Borrowed' is another mellow reserved 84bpm series of observations from Mr Skinner, cleverly chiselled lyrics which should see our Mike in the light of top ten action again

Ting Tings
Be The One
new single 6 October
Another big tune for The Ting Tings pulling in at 149bpm duration 2'50". Perhaps not quite as catchy as their three single chart hits so far but they're the hot at
the to trot right now so long may they continue

Bright Spark Gone Green

Like many we got the green future of lightbulbs through the post this week. The 11 Watt and 14 Watt light bulb each guaranteed for 10 years. At around a tenth of the cost for electricity useage they're a boon because they'll save us so much money. So much so, the electricity providers are having to increase their charges. Another little game we like to play here is 'Spot The Energy Efficient Light Bulb' - so far we've seen plenty of these planet saving inventions for sale but we've yet to spot even one shop using them. Now then who'd like some junk mail?

Chris Moyles & Camilla Ice on The Radio One Roadshow

Radio One Roadshow

Did you hear Chris Moyles bring back the Radio One Roadshow? Broadcast live from Newquay, the venue for the very first of this now redundant legendary radio series when it launched in July 1973 with Alan 'Fluff' Freeman. Even more amazing to hear that non pc feature of the past 'Bits & Pieces' at 4.45 on a Friday afternoon. Of course Radio One didn't use that name or their old Dave Clark 5 jingle but 'Bits & Pieces' it was, ten of them charts an' oldies - artist and title a point for each. In the mid 90's Radio One went through the radio equivalent of the burning of the books. Seemingly embarrassed at it's 25 year heritage, when it's target audience was half that age, it seemed the then Beeb bosses were intent on re-writing Radio 1's history without DLT or Smashie & Nicey and in particular the sixteen year veteren Simon Bates. Well here we are in another century and Radio One kind of has a similar problem except it's a bit different. Radio One's sixteen year veteren in 2008 is on maternity leave. Again. Hard to believe it, but Jo Whiley has been at the station since 1992. Congratulations Jo, time is such a healer. DJ links come and go but I'll always remember Jo's first link on daytime Radio One ... "Hi I'm Jo Whiley, I presume you know who you are!" I bet that line did not come from Simon Mayo's script-writer.
