Alex Clare
Too Close
new single
New Island Records signing Alex Clare, whose Diplo & Switch produced debut single “Up All Night” has generated a genuine buzz across radio, press and the blogosphere, follows up with the April 18th release of his new single “Too Close”. The single, produced once again by Diplo & Switch, is taken from Clare’s forthcoming debut album which will be released in the summer. The 25 year old Golders Green native recently previewed tracks from the album during a couple of incendiary live shows and will be putting in more live shows in the coming months. Clare writes and sings his own songs but is not a singer songwriter, not in the traditional sense anyway. After playing in a succession of London bands and following a brief career as a chef, too many long hours and too many sliced fingers, Alex decided to go it alone and started writing songs and demoing them himself. Things happened very quickly from there. The demos found their way to Island Records and two weeks later a deal was on the table. The opportunity to work with much sought after producers – Diplo and Switch, of Major Lazer fame arose and it seemed such a perfect fit. The three of them headed off to New Orleans, Jamaica and LA, where they recorded the bulk of the album, an album which incorporates soul and jazz, funk and jungle, punk rock and dubstep and looks set to be one of the most exciting releases of 2011.
Speaking of the collaboration Clare says “They understand what I want from the arrangements. I love those heavy, sine-wave bass lines and they knew how to push them way beyond even my expectations.” Alex says the duo made him think about his songs in a totally new way, in came polyrhythms and synth sounds that just wouldn't have happened otherwise. “I tend to be a bit more reserved when I write,” he laughs. “They put it all out there – and it works.”

Alex Metric, Steve Angello & Ian Brown
Open Your Eyes
new single 8 May 2011
Welcome back Ian Brown. Ian's added words and vocals to this thumping bass laden Metric Angello creation with his usual panache. A boxing ring video has a Rocky lookalike pitched against a gigantic Robot creation, Rocky wins takes his eye off the game only for his head to be lobbed off by a great big red glove... tut sweet... hmm some current affairs analogy obviously... a nice track... somewhat beguiling and I think I'm now ready for the full battle cry, rather than the pleading 'Open Your Eyes' and please please let's do something... The time is now.... Charge!!! Hit potential

Alex Metric and Steve Angello are proud to announce that indie legend Ian Brown will feature as vocalist on the new version of their massive dance tune “Open Your Eyes”. “Open Your Eyes” will be released on 8th May 2011 through Postiva/Virgin Records. The instrumental was released via BeatPort at the end of January and has been tearing up the dance scene ever since with spins from: Pete Tong (who said the track was so big it would need its own festival!), Zane Lowe and Annie Mac with a massive response from the public via text and email. Alex said: “it is truly amazing for me to have someone whose music has had such an impact on what I do singing on “Open Your Eyes”. It was an honour to work with him. He sounds fantastic on the track and lyrically manages to capture the epic quality of the instrumental. So proud of our version; Ian brown I salute you!” Best known as the former lead singer of The Stone Roses, this is a new direction for Ian Brown who said: “I’m made up to be on board”.
Alex Metric has been blazing a trail over the last couple of years. His glitchy productions, innovatively combining his love of 80s synth-pop, filter disco, big beat and indie, have been devastating dancefloors worldwide. His collaborator, Steve Angello, is already a highly regarded DJ and Producer worldwide with his underground productions. Steve has gone on to scale further heights as part of the Swedish House Mafia, with two Top 10 singles and sell out Arena shows.
Alex Metric will release an album later in the summer and will feature original material, remixes and productions.

Ayo
Miracle
new single
Big money, big dicks and bigger egos... here it comes
"She's a miracle... what I need tennis for" ha ha.. full marks for funny too! Possible hit!!!
Triple-threat artist AYO is set to release his second single ‘Miracle’ on May 29th 2011, on the label he co-owns, Illstarz/Seismic Sounds. Produced by AYO (aka AYOMUSIC) himself, ‘Miracle’ is an up-tempo, disco-influenced themed track, brought up-to-date by the East Londoner’s signature synth sounds.
With feature vocals from emerging artist Alex Martin, AYO delivers a cocky but confident ode to that girl who is a miracle. “The track is about experiencing love from someone who is so perfect that it feels like they were sent from up above, hence the title of the single,” says AYO.
AYO is the multi-talented producer, rapper and songwriter hailing from Hackney, who is fast becoming a much sought-after producer by UK and international acts. The 24-year-old is currently working on his debut album that is set to be released later this year, and he will also be releasing his second EP, yet to be named, very soon!

The Bullits
Close Your Eyes
new single 11 April 2011

The Bullitts are the inspired brainchild of writer, producer and musician Jeymes Samuel (Jay-Z, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Estelle, Passion Pit, Mos Def, Roisin Murphy, Emeliana Torrini). Its creator, Samuel describes the new outfit’s musical genre as ‘Action Adventure’.
Their debut single Close Your Eyes harnesses the power of hip-hop’s hottest newcomer (and Jay-Z’s most recent signing) Jay Electronica, world famous actress Lucy Liu (in her musical debut) and features Samuel’s distinctively rich baritone on vocals. This haunting track has a beautiful cinematic quality and is accompanied by a mesmerizing dream like video, which is a clever re-edit of Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel’s film, Un Chien Andalou.
Close Your Eyes has already received high praise and accolades from the nations foremost tastemakers being crowned ‘Hottest Record In The World’ by Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, ‘Hot Jam of the Week’ by Mista Jam on Radio 1 Xtra and record of the week by Nick Grimshaw on his evening Radio 1 show. It will be the first release from The Bullitts debut album, They Die By Dawn and Other Short Stories that, in addition to Lucy Liu and Jay Electronica features inspired performances from Tori Amos and Mos Def amongst others.
True to their Action Adventure genre the album introduces Liu in the role of Amelia Sparks, an ice-cold murderess awaiting execution on death row. Acting as the album’s narrator, Sparks’ weaves in and out of the tracks recounting her story and the actions that lead to her formidable position. The grisly events are also played out in real time on The Bullitts Twitter page (www.twitter.com/thebullitts) where Amelia’s diary is serialised in of the moment tweets - it also features an illustrious cast of extras such as Idris Elba (The Wire, Takers, Luther) who plays detective Saul Emmanuel.
The album boasts intelligent, sample free pop, with a strong visual narrative that has all the taut twists and turns of a suspense novel.

Cage The Elephant
Around My Head
new single 23 May 2011
I just love this band - they've had a few minor flirtations with the top forty but maybe this will give them the big song they deserve. Hope so

"A powerful, anthemic appeal that matches their positive outlook." - THE INDEPENDENT
"It's then just a matter of pouring on the noise and excitement, something they achieve in short, sharp bursts with room to spare" – Q
"They run the rockin' gamut through steamhammer punkabilly, garage malevolence and caustic psychouts." - UNCUT
Having just been confirmed for Radio One Big Weekend and Reading and Leeds, CAGE THE ELEPHANT release their second single ‘Around My Head’ through Virgin Records on May 23rd. Taken from their US Billboard #2 record ‘Thank You Happy Birthday’ - the album has received huge praise both in the US and the UK, with The Guardian describing it as “some of the catchiest melodies you'll hear this year” and Kerrang as "Raw and fascinating". This follows the success of their opening single ‘Shake Me Down’ which received A list radio support from Radio 1, Absolute and Xfm.
The young five-piece from Bowling Green, Kentucky, Matt Shultz (vocals), Brad Shultz (guitar), Daniel Tichenor (bass), Lincoln Parish (guitar) and Jared Champion (drums), accumulated over 80 songs worth of ideas during a 2-year period touring around the globe and living here in the UK supporting their eponymous debut. As well as their festival appearances in the UK this summer, they about to embark on a US tour in April with Biffy Clyro supporting.

Oh My!
Run This Town
new single
Liking this if it's inspired by Tweets descending knickers it's going in the right erection sorry direction... lovely!!!

Naming yourself after a lyric from one of your favourite songs shows passion. It’s a very public tip of the cap to one of your musical influences and a good indicator of what's to come. Taken from the Tweet and Missy Elliot anthem ‘Oops, ’ Oh My! are Alex and Jade, two friends from school who have planted their brand of modern pop on 679 Artists – the home of Plan B, Marina & The Diamonds, Little Boots and The Streets.
Oh My! have already caught the attention of the inescapable electronic-rave-monster Example, after they bumped into him at their recording studio. He was so charmed that insisted on writing a track for Alex and Jade, which has since turned into many tracks.

The Overtones
The Longest Time
new single 24 April 2011
Yes well - can't say more than requested so that's a plus and it's a Billy Joel song and it's very visible at Asda and this would probably be in the Top 40 a few years back and maybe this year

Fresh from their takeover of ITV1’s ‘Dancing On Ice’, musical sensations The Overtones release their new single ‘The Longest Time’. Originally a hit for Billy Joel, ‘The Longest Time’ is the perfect vehicle for The Overtones’ harmonious voices and musical chemistry.
The Overtones, the five-piece who stylishly blend classic 50s’ harmonies with modern pop, recently performed on ‘Dancing On Ice’ (on 13th March 2011), becoming the evening’s house band and accompanying each dance – including one by Torvill & Dean – with specially arranged versions of retro and contemporary hits, from Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers’ ‘Why Do Fools Fall In Love’ to Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep.’ They returned for the evening’s later results show to perform a song from their debut album, the self-penned ‘Gambling Man.’
Their debut album ‘Good Ol’ Fashioned Love’ was released in November 2010 and has already gone gold. Just hours after their performance on Dancing On Ice the album had shot up to number two on the Amazon chart and number six on iTunes.
When interviewing The Overtones for the Guardian Paul Morley described them as being “rooted in the pure idea of doo wop as the 1950s R'n'B link to gospel and even Gregorian chant, and the idea of doo wop as a condensed, miniaturised form of the big band and a way of mimicking instruments using voices. They can swing, for the hell of it.” In an era where all the best British voices right now tend to be female ones - Amy Winehouse, Adele, Paloma Faith - The Overtones are a timely reminder that men can sing flawlessly as well. The band are now embarking on their debut headline tour where audiences will be able to enjoy their musical talents and astonishing vocals in these intimate venues.
March 23rd Jazz Café, London (sold out)
March 24th Bristol Thekla
March 25th The Library, HMV Institute Birmingham
March 27th Kazamier, Liverpool
March 28th The Lowry, Manchester (sold out)

Equity fears it's membership
Posted Thursday 14th April 2011 - Source Equity
Curious rule change required in fear of so called 'democracy'...

Dear Equity member,

The Equity Council has decided to support a referendum to change Equity's Rules so that in the future any member involved in harassment, prejudice or unfair discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, ethnic or national origin, religion, colour, class, caring responsibilities, marital status, sexuality, disability or age can be disciplined by the union.

The proposal was discussed at last year's Equity Annual Representative Conference when the union's Minority Ethnic Members' Committee put down a motion calling for the Rules to be changed.

The call for a change to the Rules came after a public furore when an Equity member was outed by the Guardian as an member of one of the UK’s extreme right wing parties. Equity’s lawyers advised at the time that the union’s Rules prevented the union from taking any action, including raising the issue with the member. Equity was publicly criticised in some quarters for taking no action.

Equity's Rules currently guarantee the right for every member to hold and express their personal political and other beliefs in their private and professional capacities. The proposed rule change would remove that guarantee for members involved in harassment, prejudice or unfair discrimination, opening them to a complaint and, potentially, disciplinary action.

The voting paper is enclosed with your Spring Equity magazine, but you might find it quicker and easier to vote on-line. Visit www.votepopularis.com/equity for details and have your voting paper to hand as you will need the unique number to cast your vote.

Make sure you vote by the close of poll on 18 May. Please note that the 6 May as a closing date on the voting paper is an error.

The Equity Council is urging you to vote "Yes" in this referendum.

Yours sincerely

Martin Brown, Assistant General Secretary
