Chapel Club
The Shore
free download track
Yep this band have got it... there's a quiet assurance to their work, composure and kn
ow-how, a great atmospheric feel to again a slow chugging anthemic rock tune. This six minute opus begins with the sound of water surfing the shore... before revealing itself... intriguing and another strong progression from one of the UK's hotly tipped new bands. Great

Chase & Status
Let You Go
new single
Another fine track from C&S... I feel there'll be a drum n bass laden remix on the way shortly... here's the PR
"Chase & Status are back with the release of 'Let You Go' featuring new talent Mali, to be released on the 16th August through Vertigo. 'Let You Go' sees Chase & Status return with a ferocious new soul and energy, leaving no stone unturned on the path to what is destined to be a sure-fire hit. For the past few months Chase & Status have been meticulously balancing their time between DJ sets, live tours, and extensive studio sessions whilst working on the much anticipated follow up to their genre bending debut, 'More Than A Lot'."

!!!
The Most Certaiin Sure
new single
Right from the crazy three exclamation mark name '!!!'.... this track lives up to the expectation it will be different.. kinda funky with a bassy voice and some catchy vocal hooks. Then there's track two 'AM/FM' radio edit... yep this track is called 'AM/FM' and this is the radio edit, another funky outing... and then there's 'The Hammer' sounding surprisingly light and mellow, some very airy keyboard work against a light rhythm track... good booty, could attract plenty new ears.. good material.

Funeral Party
Just Because
new single
Short and sweet, fast and furious, top drawer indie rock from Funeral Party who've created somewhat of a trademark sound with their first releases. 'Just Because' is a strong production and should win the band plenty of new fans.. not sure it'll top forty but with continued progress maybe next time.

Goldfrapp
Believer
new single 6 September 2010
Third single lucky... this is a fine pop tune from Goldfrapp who's latest album hasn't bagged one top forty single... yet. Hopefully 'Believer' with it's bright uplifting message and arrangement (and clutch of remixes) will do the trick. Top track

Groove Armada & Will Young
History
new single
Another surprisingly absent hit outfit due a success are Groove Armada.. I saw them hook up with Young Will on Wossy's BBC Won show and they turned in a fine performance of this track which surely with Will's fanage must be a hit contender. Good tune

Papa Roach
Kick In The Teeth
new single 30 August
'Time For Annihilation'.... the new album from Papa Roach and the first single 'Kick In The Teeth'.. utilising a Gary Glitter style drum beat with Pink 'Na Na Na N
a' vocals... distinctive Papa Roach feel... perhaps a little mellow than 'Insects' etc but still on the edge... There was no furore over Glitter in the States and 'Rock & Roll' - Glitter's only hit in the USA remains a football terrace like tune and there surely is some liking for that sound somewhere in the back of the Papa's minds... Teeth' is a good track and it should reach the UK Top Ten but possible only top thirty because of the bands inactivity... See them at the Sonisphere Festival on 30 July.

Pretty Reckless
Miss Nothing
new single 23 August
Easy review...top notch since the age of three Taylors been groomed for this.. at seventeen she's bang on the money... one UK top twenty under her belt below those heaving breasts and this sounds like hit number two!! Fine record and Pretty written all over it... top production, top dosh behind this new assault on our aural pleasures, top record... here's the PR...
"Seen on TV as part of the elite crowd in ITV2’s hugely popular TV series Gossip Girl, she’s been heralded as Hollywood’s hottest new fashionista and now we get to see and hear the darker side of Taylor Momsen, with her rock band The Pretty Reckless. Formed last year by Momsen and signed to Interscope Records, The Pretty Reckless release their debut album ‘Light Me Up’, produced by Kato Khandwala (Blondie, My Chemical Romance, Paramore) on August 30th, preceded by their second single, the garage-rock stomper ‘Miss Nothing’ on Aug 23rd through Interscope/Polydor Records. The New York quartet released their debut single, ‘Make Me Wanna Die’ to a rapturous response earlier this year and was an iTunes Top 10 hit and A-listed on Radio One and the Kerrang network, as well as being Fearne Cotton’s Record of the Week. The Pretty Reckless - 17 year-old vocalist/lyricist Taylor, completed by guitarist and co-writer Ben Phillips, bassist Mark Damon and percussionist Jamie Perkins - first ever UK live show in London was packed-to-the-rafters and described by Kerrang magazine as : “heavy riffs and wailing guitar solos…the crowd are at the Gossip-Girl-gone-grunge’s mercy”. The four-piece are currently on the US Vans Warped Tour which will see them play forty two dates across the US. The Pretty Reckless’ debut album ‘Light Me Up’ is an unflinchingly honest chronicle of Momsen’s experiences, filtered through her unique point of view: “The record is about life,” says Taylor, “It covers everything: love, death, and music itself. It’s rock and roll. It’s sex. It’s drugs. It’s religion. It’s politics. Each song tells a story about the trials and tribulations and emotional struggles that I’ve experienced or observed. It’s not a happy pop record, but it’s not Satan-worshiping either. The lyrics aren’t meant to be taken literally, they are open to interpretation.”

Wickes
Heatwave

From Cardiff and the West Midlands comes Wickes and wow this track crashes in with an amazing echo-ey feel, big drums crashing through as if recorded in an air-raid shelter and then.... it doesn't seem to carry through the song... 'Heatwave' with it's vocals in effect and bass and guitar kinda hanging there just doesn't fill the sandwich. I'm not sure this isn't a quiet grower but for now I think Wickes if they get an idea like this - they'll have to carry it through and give the verse and chorus much stronger form... they sound like they may be having a great time but to win attention I feel they'll have to demonstrate rather more talent too.

This week's Goss ...

UK Top 40 Sun 18 Jul 10
The top notch 'Airplanes' of Bobby Ray & Hayley Williams climbs to number one on it's seventh week in the UK Top 40... and it's nearly there in the US where Katy Perry hangs on to top spot for a sixth week.

Ooops JLS seem to be in a little difficulty... all the X-Factor fans rushed out to buy their new song last week... this week 'The Club Is Alive' - their strange rip-off of 'The Sound Of Music' drops to number seven... that's a big fall in two weeks by any standards. Perhaps they didn't realise just how cringeworthy most of us would find it... reminds me of a black music station I worked for called WNK... so difficult getting anyone to advertise on WNK... obvious to most of us why.

Marshall Mathers 'Recovery' returns to the top of the UK Album Chart and Em's 'duet' with Rihanna moves up to 3 on the singles.

Spillers Re-opens
Posted Wednesday 21st July 2010
Here's the latest from our favourite indie..... "We thought we should let you know how things have been progressing with our epic move from our home of 60 years, 36, The Hayes. In total, it took us 14 straight days and 3 skips to vacate our old home but we did it! As you can imagine, there were a lot of 'finds' along the way, from card board cut out displays to long lost stock that had been stashed away in the depths of our basement. We can't wait to get these on sale and on display in the new shop once we get a chance to sift through them. Thanks to the hard work of the staff here and a lot of special people we got out and are now in full flow with the set up of our new shop. For those of you who don't yet know, we've not moved far - just in to the Morgan Arcade (right next to the Bakers Row / Metros entrance). We love our new surroundings and are please to tell you that there is 180 degree window space which means ... lots of light and lots of space to create splendid window displays! This will be one of the biggest differences for you and us after so many years in the old place which was (in the nicest possible way!) a wee bit dingy! We've had a wall taken down on the shop floor and given the whole place a lick of paint. We're creating what we've been referring to as the M.B.A (Mezzanine Browsing Area - also known as the V.P.L - Vinyl Perusing Landing!). This will be a quiet area upstairs with listening posts, recommends and our Vinyl racks. Very exciting! We're delighted that our old Spillers sign is going to find a new home at St Fagans Museum. To commemorate our relocation, the legendary Pete Fowler (who you Super Furry Animals fans will know from all the great art work he's done for them). If you don't know his work, check it our here : http://monsterism.net/ The T shirt looks fantastic and we'll be setting up a shop that will take paypal payments for those of you that like that kind of thing! We'll let you know when that is set up and we'll put a link on our front page here as well. Now to opening : We're aiming for the middle of next week and we'll give you a definite day towards the end of this week so look out for that confirmation in the next few days. As far as releases go, there's a cracking new release from Gruff Rhys in the form of a collaboration with Tony Da Gatorra. We will have this on sale for our opening day. We hope that brings you up to date. We appreciate all your encouragement, support and patience in waiting for our opening. All we need you to do is to bring (long!) shopping lists in with you when you come to see our new home. We will, as always, endeavour to order you anything we are unable to supply over the counter. We hope you're all smashing and can't wait to welcome you to Spillers Records 31, Morgan Arcade, Cardiff CF10 1AF xx"

Missing Person
Posted Sunday 18th July 2010
Anyone seen Gordon.. you remember Britain's Prime Minister until May 6th or was it May 11th. Plenty of rumours flying around...
'How is Gordon?' the BBC man questioned Peter Mandelson... 'Oh he's fine working in Westminster and his constiutuency'.... except no-one seems to have seen him for weeks... Wherefore art he? Being de-briefed, returned to Russia, on holiday with Yo-Blair??? The mystery deepens and how many newsrooms are running a wager on just when his reappearance may be...
