The Delays
Star Tiger Star Arial
new album 14 June
I really like The Delays.. 'Valentine' was one of the best records of the past ten years... why it wasn't airplayed and number one everywhere is a mystery... maybe the rnb juggernaught has just inevitably flattened uk indie... and we're left picking up the grime that has been foist on us thanks to the previous government... 'Star Tiger Star Ariel' is another fine set of songs right from the opening chime of the mellow strongly building 'Find A Home', into the bassy stomp of 'The Lost Estate', the guitar riffing rocker 'Shanghaied' and the atmospheric 'Rhapsody'.
Then there's the intriguing the somewhat masterpiece, masterpiece because of the ambition to write a song of this nature... Good Books did a superb tune 'Paschendael' a couple of years back now The Delays have come up with 'May '45'... the month when the Second World War in Europe ended. Not sure what they're getting at lyrically "Decades light up even in your old age, find you even in your bird cage, breaking curfew like a child.... her face lives in pictures of a lost age, all that's precious to a hostage...." Life seems to have become a cartoon and I'm not sure these lyrics haven't divorced the life changing reality from our by comparison cosy existence... they're kind of treading a parallell path to MIA - a terrorists' daughter who's just become a mother and married the son of the boss of Warner Brothers Records and here we are and now is dishing up frightening imagery as if it were 'Girls and boys come out to play'... it's a tough subject to cover so who knows? And then there's the utterly brilliant 'Unsung' just as awesome as 'Valentine' why aren't these top tracks hits... is it demographics? or is prime time coverage?? There's certainly more to it than is obvious. This is a great collection and The Delay
s should right now be one of the biggest bands in the UK.

Dinosaur Pile-Up
Birds & Planes
new single 2 August 2010
Dinosaur Pile-Up are a superb new rock band... fuzzy throbbing guitar sound, great vocals, well thought out songs in an indie/rock stylee. 'Birds and Planes' is the latest in series of great singles and deserves the success they would have undoubtedly had were this released during the Arctic Monkeys era of 2005-06. A fine record.

Eminem & Rihanna
Love The Way You Lie
new single 9 August 2010
I'm not a fan of the mindless profanity... too many F words spoils the shagging... having said that... this has a finely sung chorus ... the lyrics seem to suggest a love of liars.. which is a little beguiling... I'm sure it can't be sincere... good record ... dubious morality... so a transatlantic number one... uk and usa looks likely...

This week's Goss ...

UK Top 40 Sun 11 Jul 10
JLS are on top of Katy Perry - an enviable position to be in especially if it were replicated Staeside. Alas our Ex Factor err X-Factor boys will have to wait for that milestone... the soon to be Mrs Brand is top for a fifth week in the States just ahead of Eminem & Rihanna.

Kylie goes straight to the top of the UK's Albums with her new set 'Aphrodite'.

Who Doctor?
Posted Friday 16th July 2010
I don't think it's Matt Smith's fault after all he is now canoodling Daisy Lowe... but he's got BEEB bosses scratching their heads... Here's the comparative viewing figures for the three most recent Doctors final show of their first series...
1 David Tennant 7.7 million
2 Christopher Eccleston 6.9 milion
3 Matt Smith well down on 5.1 million
... they may have to look at the storylines which seem to increasingly showcase writers desperation.
