The Features are a psychedelic rock outfit that plays fresh, off-kilter pop that sounds like a head-on collision between Ray Davies and Elvis Costello with the Elephan 6 Collective picking up the pieces and putting them back together in the American South. Formed in the small, hidden town of Sparta, Tennessee, guitarist and vocalist Matt Pelham, bassist Roger Dabbs, keyboardist Parrish Yaw, and drummer Rollum Haas began playing their quirky and contagious pop as the Features around Pelham's colorful personal ruminations. Their self-titled debut EP, released in 1997, drew heavily on thick keyboards and an original, updated new wave sound. The Beginning EP -- a classicist pop record, at once as lush and sun-dappled as the Shins, and as pointed and probing as the Jam, followed with a U.K. release on Fierce Panda in 2003. The record was put out in the United States by Universal in March of 2004, with slightly altered tracking. Several other U.K. 7"s never saw a U.S. domestic release, but the The Beginning was finally unleashed stateside in March 2004. www.thefeatures.com

THE SWELL caught above givin' it some welly on 'My Sharona'. It was another Festival Friday, so our bossman Johnny Wing was tented up in Staffordshire fending off three hours rain armed only with a crate of Strongbow!

The Libertines are without doubt the hottest band of the moment. Any one of at least six of their tracks will fill our dance floor. I really hope Pete Doherty gets himself together coz they could be massive. When The Libertines played at Mad4it! last year one lady had a big surprise whilst making a request to me, when she felt Pete's wandering hands on her nether regions. She seemed happy enough when she realized who it was and they dissappeared into the darkness together!

Here's Friday's list:-

Thank you a non. To be continued,,,, possibly ... (ps the Mike referred to is a different Mike). 21/8 8.18pm msg to hq - I am the Nick as stated in this story, it was in general a good day and I just wanna say that I certainly do not hate Simon, the person who wrote it. And some details have been missed out in the story, including Mike's hilarious walk, falling off chairs and minor challenges.

The Vanities + Kilo C
The Vanities new 'The Buzz' EP is out on August 16 on Star Asylum records. Since releasing their debut single ‘Space Tourist’ on Boobytrap Records in 2002, The Vanities have continued to enjoy a strong presence on the Cardiff music scene. Sounding like a 21st Century take on Duran Duran with a distinct New
Romantic slant, their last record was even produced by Tony Hadley (how’s that for authenticity!?). The Vanities also count the likes of Kraftwerk, Bowie, Depeche Mode and Nirvana among their many musical influences. Live, their shows are extravagant, compulsive, charismatic, violent and bursting with energy. And here's what you got - a lot of light, a lot of smoke and a lot of sound!

ANOTHER SOLD OUT SHOW(£9) Once the onslaught of the Nu Metal movement began to die down, a handful of less overtly commercial-sounding rock acts from both sides of the Atlantic began to edge into the spotlight. Tightly-knit thanks to a relentless tour schedule on which many of the bands - Hundred Reasons, Reuben and Biffy Clyro, to name but a few - revolved headline slots and generally played every venue in the nation. Initially, the mainstream music press were cautious with their coverage, but the bands built up truly diehard fanbases and inked deals with proper record labels like Beggars Banquet (Biffy Clyro) and Columbia (Hundred Reasons).
Hell Is For Heroes formed from the ashes of ace Britrock teenagers Symposium, Will McGonagle and Joe Birch got into contact with old schoolfriends James Findlay and Tom O'Donoghue. Eventually recruiting singer Justin Schlosberg to complete the line-up, the band released their own single, a home recorded version of 'Sick/Happy', before signing to EMI/Chrysalis. The label wisely kept the album under wraps for a few months, while their live reputation built up and a brace of singles kept the public interested. Then in February 2003, their debut album, The Neon Handshake, was released. Recorded by former Refused producers, Pelle Henricsson and Eskil Lovstrom, the album was a highlight of the post-hardcore rock scene, entering the UK charts at No.16.
Mad4it! Clubnight doors open from 10.30pm-ish, if you come to the gig Mad4it admission is free - otherwise it's £4 / £3 NUS Concessions
