Stereophonics -
Rewind
new single 21 November
It's been a good year for all involved in the Stereophonics. Stuart Cable must be happy too .. looking for a singer for his new band ... established as a TV Presenter who has already provided a quote of the decade "You know me, I don't give a f**k, I'll have a sh*t anywhere". Presumably the "I don't give a f**k" bit is why he's no longer in the Phonics who obviously do give a "f**k". A lot of thought went into their latest album from the one word titles to the sleeve design and it's paid off. This'll be the Stereo's fourth hit of the year in their 9th year of success - and Kelly is continuing to set songwriting challenges for himself. XXXx

Editors -
Munich
new single 2 January
More evidence here of hard work paying off. Editors three shows at Cardiff Barfly and hectic gigging for a few years now has created a demand for themselves. Munich is to be released for the third time in January. It's a storming no messing about production, short sharp to the point pounding away this time into the top ten. XXXX

Blondie vs. The Doors -
Rapture Riders
new single 14 November
Ever imagined what Debbie Harry and Jim Morrison jamming together might sound like? Mark Vidler (aka Go Home Productions) did and he's created the best mix you'll ever hear. I can't imagine anything improving upon this, the bass riff from Blondie's Rapture fits The Doors Riders On The Storm perfectly, Debbie's rap from Rapture melds with Jim's vocal so tightly you can even hear their breaths. Some may think it sacrilege but I've been playing this mix for a year now, the remaining Doors approve, it will be featured on Blondie's new Greatest Hits Collection and I would hazard a guess that Jim loves it! Madonna - Hung Up new single 7 November
Confessions For Sale
new album 14 November
She's Number One again .. twice .. single and album. When comparison is made between The Beatles 7 years peak creativity and Madonna's 21 years you get to understand the extent of her influence a little. Madge may regret saying "Losing my virginity was a career move" and cringe at the thought of some ex's but here she is as iconic as ever, sampling Abba and not taking no for an answer. Age is not an issue really, managing it maybe. So let's launch the album live from London's Koko and broadcast it live on AOL - awesome! And what are the odds on another ten Madonna Number Ones? XXXX

Negative For Francis -
Losing Control / Love Bug
new single 21 Nov
As in 'Not Losing Control' the disco-tinged punk-edged sounds of Negative For Francis have made the 3-piece contemporary gods of rock and roll. Nick's distinctive catchy shrill vocals, guitarist Steve's signature one-note staccato riffs, and Craig's "John Bonham does disco" style drums produce a hard-edged, gritty but very radio-friendly pop menagerie. The guys have ensured they're sure-fire certs as ones to watch in the next couple of months as they continue their barrage of new material and energetic live performances that have managed to already make them quite a name. The Fold - On You / Loading To The Crash new single 14 Nov
Feminist-Autonomous-death-sex-indie-hardcore-electro-super-art-ultra-punk-plural-mess. That is a sub-genre, The Fold are a cliché, a mixture of all the above but, really not any of them. Feedback and eyeliner is generally all the inspiration The Fold have, with perhaps a few angular haircuts thrown in for that extra pizzazz. XXx

Gogol Bordello -
Start Wearing Purple
new single 28 November
Who? Founders of the Gypsy Punk Movement which they started in their hometown New York City. This is the counter culture revolution .. another one ... 50 Cent is quaking in his boots. 'Start Wearing Purple' is taken from Gogol B's third album 'Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike' you get the picture? Yes we see! I feel a future duet with Hayseed Dixie coming on, he'd be pleased with this - a very strange vocal performance and a nice bit of fiddling guitar over a semi reggae ... well you know XXXx

Franz Ferdinand -
Walk Away
new single 5 December
Franz on a sell-out US Tour climaxing at Madison Sq Gardens and an appearance on Saturday Night Live. See them live in the UK opening on Monday 14 November at Cardiff Arena, then Brighton, Brum, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Hull, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and ending with four nights at London Alexandra Palace. Walk Away features a kind of 60's tv detective show bass riff, is featured on their new album 'You Could Have It So Much Better' and will go straight into the Top Ten. XXXx

Kubb - Mother
new album out 14 November
There can be no more touching way of expressing grief over bereavement than the beautiful, poignant, heart rending words to 'Remain' as in 'I still Remain' ... and what superb musicianship. 'Wicked Soul' has a sexy groove just right for a saucy song about the bedroom. As you may have guessed by now this album is more than a little autobiographical. T
his fella was spotted and aired a long time ago by Jo Whiley. That he delivers an exceptionally mature record is a great compliment. He is Harry Collier trading as Kubb, together with his band who've been fine tuning this debut record all year, three appearances at Cardiff Barfly and there's still time for more ... but bigger venues and TV will be calling very soon. Curerbell - This Used To Be A Happy Place new EP out now
Kevin Jones (pictured) with the help of Catatonia Drummer Aled and also known as Curerbell deliever a quality listen here. Recorded at Sonic-One Studio, Kidwelly and produced by Tim Hamill - four top tunes starting with 'Social Melody' which Kev persuaded me to play at Mad4it! Well done, nice one ... The Human League -
Original Mixes & Rarities
new album
Never before available on CD and well worth a purchase if you're a League fan or interested in the history of electro. Don't You Want Me in it's 7 minute guise, Sound Of The Crowd, I used to particularly like The Lebanon, Being Boiled sounds great on this CD, then there's Oakey's Giorgio Moroder collaboration Electric Dreams which is so fluffy and brilliant even now. Hey Don't You Want Me was Xmas Number One 24 years ago, Christmas is coming again ... XXXx

Mystery Jets -
Alas Agnes
new single 5 December
The Arctics have kind of leapfrogged The Mystery Jets whom many tipped early last year, however it does seem they've still a pretty good chance of getting in there. Agnes (the tale of a sex change too far) follows previous single Dennis in it's quaintness, and off the wall Britishness but the competition's getting tough - Bromheads and Vincent Vincent joining the queue ... Mystery Jets are on tour in December : Hull, Darlington, Newcastle, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh ... XXXX

Clearlake -
Good Clean Fun
new single 5 December
"Good clean fun never hurt no-one, I'd like to know when I can get mine ... " This is Brighton based band Clearlake's best single yet, a more harmonic approach to the vocals, a simple lyric, great guitar and harmonica?. Taken from their soon to be released third album 'Amber', Produced by Phil Brown (of Talk Talk, Bob Marley and Led Zeppelin credits) and Steve Osborne (of U2, Happy Mondays & KT Tunstall) While the Caribou remix features up-tempoed drums both mixes are great appetizers for the album. Wednesday 13 - Bad Things
new single 21 November

Wednesday's back, lifted from 'Transylvania 90210' - almost as sick and demented as the news bulletin I've just seen, it's a worrying trend being out-demented by the news. 'Bad Things' "I wanna kill you, dig you up and do it again ... I want bad things to happen to you" could be just what Fern Cotton needs to brighten up her Saturday Morning ... Alice Cooper can be proud of creating the Monster Success that is as he labels it Theatre Rock. See them at London Mean Fiddler 22 Nov and Brighton Concorde 2 on the 23rd. XXXx

The Semifinalists -
Show The Way
new single 28 November
The Semifinalists are Chris Steele Nicholson, Adrianna Alba and Ferry Gouw who met eachother while recording a soundtrack for a mutal friend's movie at film school in London. One thing led to another and they discovered a mutual love for what they describe as psychadelic folk dashed with a hint of punk ... The results are interesting enough a long spooky soundtrack type atmospheric intro then a blast of nasty guitar - 'Show The Way' should raise a few eyebrows, see them on a 9 date tour in December supporting The Mystery Jets, winding up at The Water Rats, London Grays Inn Road on Christmas Eve. The Longcut -
Party Megamix
new 3" CD available at gigs
Meld noisy guitar and dance beats, there's a lot of it about and it makes for a pounding soundtrack ... particularly on the opening track of this limited edition CD - 'A Quiet Life - Kid 606 Loud Acid Remix' a true stomper. Minotaur Shock and LFO provide some interesting remixes of Longcut faves Transition and Last Act Of A Desperate Man. They play in Manchester Met K2 on the 8th Nov, Bristol Trinity on the 10th Nov and London Cargo on Friday 11th Nov and the first one hundred at each gig will receive one of these CD's free

The Upper Room -
Her Alibi
sampler demo
The Upper Room had a very strong single released in Summer 04. Almost Bono-esque 'All Over This Town' was written by lead singer Alex on Christmas Day and has been re-recorded and is due for re-release in Jan 06. Three new songs produced by Paul Schroeder (of Stone Roses fame) appear on this sampler 'Her Alibi' with the same searing guitar sound, the rather romantic 'Black & White' which suits it's accoustic arrangement perfectly, and the bass driven 'Combination'. Months of hard gigging with Longview, Electric Soft Parade and Hope of The States and focussed attention to writing have paid off, this is good material. XXXx

Wheatus - Too Soon Monsoon
new album 24 October
www.wheatus.com (Posted 8 November)
There's so much more to this band than Teenage Dirtbag but how do you follow such a massive crossover hit? Not many would offer a mature & offbeat album like this. Part of the Wheatus problem is that they've won an audience who expected an hour of Teenage Dirtbag type songs, good though that song is there is much more depth to this band's writing and they haven't managed to carry their interest into the deeper stuff. Any album with a classic (ie a spine-tingler) is worth it's dosh and Too Soon Monsoon features a very moving recollection of 9/11 and some everyday effects, set to rather unusual soundtrack. Check the words for Hometown. XXXXx
